Jackson’s MLK Corridor Project Under Development
The Jackson Anchor Initiative and the City of Jackson are working with the GWJ Group, LLC to help develop the MLK Corridor in Jackson. The redevelopment plan includes three areas of focus: Economic Development, Organization, and Communication. The project is being done in coordination with the MLK Corridor Improvement Authority (MLK CIA) which is made up of community members. The MLK CIA was established in 2020 by the City of Jackson and a board of directors has been appointed who oversee the Authority activities.
The main goal of the MLK Corridor Improvement Authority is to promote the redevelopment of commercial corridors located on South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (from Franklin to South Street) and Prospect Street (from Cooper to 4th Street).
The Mission Statement of the MLK CIA asserts that “The Martin Luther King Jr. Corridor Improvement Authority promotes economic growth and development by aiding in the reinvestment and revitalization of property and supporting community and business opportunities within its district area.”
The vision of the MLK CIA is to “further enhance Jackson’s south side into a thriving, world-class community experiencing economic prosperity, committed and dedicated to diversity and inclusion, while maintaining high ethical standards.”
The groups will be working together and plan to have public meetings and townhall sessions with the community this spring and summer, along with workshop sessions with the city council. The GWJ Group has worked with the Jackson Anchor Initiative on other projects and are cooperating to bring local and new investors to Jackson for this new opportunity.
